While driving down the road one day in his 1968 Barracuda, Paul Voelker (a research chemist) wondered what the condition of his oil was and how he could chemically determine this. He applied a life science technology used for high performance liquid chromatography to the problem and came up with a unique solution that was able to determine fine gradients of polarity in a non-aqueous liquid, something that had never been achieved before. The initial tests were very positive. However, it took over 10 years of working in his garage on weekends and holidays to find all of the ways that the technique would fail until he and his co-inventor (Joe Hedges, pictured to the right) finally declared the technology ready to commercialize. With that, VSI (since renamed Oil Advantage) was born.
